In honor of Yule celebrations, Princess Thirrin invited Oskan Witch's Son to the castle. The pair had met when Princess Thirrin was out hunting with a group of soldiers and attacked by a Greyling Bear, who had brutally injured one of her soldiers before Princess Thirrin killed it off. Oskan appeared very soon after this and invited them into his cave, where he lived. Oskan was later made Royal Advisor to Thirrin, who served as Regent while her father was off at war with the Polypontians. King Redrought Freer Strong-in-the-Arm Lidenshield, Bear of the North and Protector of the Land, and his most trusted Advisor, Lady Theowin, were killed in action. Princess Thirrin now became Queen Thirrin, Wildcat of the North and Protector of the Land, at fourteen years old. This is one of the main internal conflicts in the book; Thirrin trying to prove others wrong, that she can live up to the standards of the Queen and live down her youth.
As Queen of the Icemark, Thirrin must make many alliances, for the Icemark is a small country with a small population, and they need help to fight in battle against their eternal enemies, the Polypontian Empire. Since the Icemark has no neighboring countries, Thirrin resorts to alliances with the creatures only heard in fairy tales; Their Vampiric Majesties and their people, The Were-Folk, The Oak and Holly Kings, and The Snow Leopards. She takes her alliances into battle with her as she and her country battle against the army commanded by the infamous Scorpio Bellorum, the Polypontians. This battle between the two countries is the main external conflict in The Cry of the Icemark. Will the small kingdom of Icemark defeat the Polypontian Empire, and avenge their King's death?
